Machine tools enter the era of digitization and intelligence

In the process of digital transformation, Chinese machine tool companies are facing a shift from “product thinking” to “engineering delivery” as their core business thinking. In the past few decades, machine tool selection was based on samples. The final delivery of machine tools to users was mostly done in standard products. Nowadays, more and more customers buying a machine tool is equivalent to delivering a project. The machine tool manufacturer needs to follow the user’s requirements. Requirements to design process routes, select tools, design logistics, etc., require complete engineering capabilities.

This also means that 90% of the machine tools sold by more and more machine tool companies in the future may be delivered in customized form, and only 10% will be delivered as standard products, which is the opposite of many current situations. In addition, the proportion of “engineering services” in the sales of machine tool companies continues to increase, and now many “after-sales services” that are given away for free will bring greater economic benefits. To achieve this transformation, domestic machine tool companies still have a long way to go in terms of business ideas, knowledge reserves, and production organization.
